The concept of the Tiny Treehouse was born during the covid lockdowns. Like many of us, Lars Wijers, creator, designer and founder of Tiny Treehouses, spent much of his time at home tending to his houseplant passion, which is where the idea to create Tiny Treehouses that could nestle in the pot plants came about.
Simply put, Tiny Treehouses are to pot plants what birdhouses are to trees! Because these enchanting wooden models rely on your leafy greens for their home, caring for your greenery is an essential part of the Tiny Treehouse ritual. Whether you're looking for fresh plant decor ideas or seeking the best autumn tips for indoor plants, this guide will help your indoor garden thrive through the cooler months.
The Best Plant Decor Choices for Cozy Autumn Vibes If you want to pair Tiny Treehouses for your plants, it helps to choose hardy varieties that require little maintenance and look spectacular all season long.
HERE ARE LARS'S TOP AUTUMN POT PLANT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TINY TREEHOUSES
-
Snake Plant (Sansevieria): A hard-wearing plant that provides a striking vertical element and thrives in cooler temperatures and low light. Pairing idea: The Forest Cottage.
-
ZZ Plant (Zanzibar Gem): Incredibly resilient to temperature and light changes, requiring minimal watering. Its glossy leaves reflect light beautifully. Pairing idea: The Woodland Outpost.
-
Philodendron Brasil: Brings stunning autumnal hues indoors with deep green and light yellow heart-shaped leaves. Pairing idea: Temple of Serenity.
-
Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica): Featuring broad, glossy leaves in shades ranging from cream to burgundy, adding rich texture and a warm, cozy ambiance to your plant decor. Pairing idea: Horizons Edge.
-
Chinese Money Plant (Pilea): Known to bring luck and good fortune, its coin-like leaves add a playful, modern touch to any space. Pairing idea: Autumn Pavilion.
The best thing about all the plants listed above is that they will last season upon season in your home and require very little maintenance and high care, which makes them particularly hardy during the autumn and winter months.
Whilst some of our Tiny Treehouses have been designed to fit within the branches of the plants and come with a selection of hanging solutions for you to choose from, many also come with stakes to enable you to insert them into the soil at base of the plant. The Horizon’s Edge model is unique in that is has been designed to fit on the edge of the plant pot itself, which looks perfect with the more structural Sansevieria and ZZ Plants mentions above.
Styling Tiny Treehouses for Your Plants When integrating Tiny Treehouses into your botanical displays, a little planning goes a long way. If you are repotting, plant your greenery slightly to the side rather than perfectly in the middle—this leaves ample room for your treehouse to nestle into the scene.
To keep your models safe from water damage, utilise the included acrylic stakes so the wood never touches the damp soil. While you should temporarily remove the treehouse during heavy drenching sessions.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria) + The Forest Cottage.
A hard-wearing plant that creates a calming vertical element to your room, Sansevieria are perfect autumn plants because they continue to thrive in low light and cooler temperatures. Using the plant stake, you can elevate the Forest Cottage away from the soil and place it amongst the spear-like leaves. The design of the Forest Cottage Tiny Treehouse, enables you to let it protrude slightly over the plant pot edges for a great 3D effect.

The "ZZ" Plant or Zanzibar Gem Plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia) + The Woodland Outpost.
Known for its resilience, the ZZ plant will continue to grow in your home unfazed by changes to the light and temperature. It requires minimal watering throughout the year but particularly in the cooler months. Its glossy leaves reflect light beautifully, adding a consistent green element along with warmth to your indoor spaces. Again, using the plant stake here, the Woodland Outpost sits neatly in the barer spaces this plant leaves behind in the pot, which can seem quite bare without a Tiny Treehouse. Let's be honest.
ZZ Plant with Woodland Outpost
Philodendron Brasil + Temple of Serenity.
With its heart-shaped, variegated leaves in shades of deep green and light yellow, the Philodendron Brasil brings autumnal hues indoors. It is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in moderate to low light. This plant just keeps growing, so it works great in a bookshelf or on a kitchen or bathroom window where you can thread and re-thread the leaves through the space. The Temple of Serenity has a nice neat smaller footprint and sits a bit taller than the other Tiny Treehouses, so it can really rise out of the leaves like a South East Asian hidden treasure.
Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica) + Horizons Edge.
Rubber Plants are versatile, with varieties ranging from deep green to stunning variegated leaves in shades of cream, pink, and burgundy. These plants thrive in moderate light and cooler autumn temperatures, making them perfect for the season. Their glossy, broad leaves add a rich texture to indoor spaces, evoking a cozy, warm ambiance. Whether you choose a classic green or a colourful variegated variety, Rubber Plants are hardy and low-maintenance, ideal for creating a peaceful autumn vibe.
As their leaves and branches tend to grow higher and jut out in different directions, the Horizons Edge works great here, as it is placed on the edge of the pot itself, clear from the fray of leaves and the soil in the pot.
Pilea of Chinese Money Plant (Pilea Peperomioides) + Autumn Pavilion.
This is the plant you will see outside almost every Chinese business and home - and many others adopting the good fortune it supposedly brings. Known as the “Chinese Money Plant,” it is said to bring luck and good fortune.
Pilea has round, coin-like leaves that add a playful and modern touch to any space. It does well in indirect light and fits the cozy, earthy vibes of autumn with its unique shape and easy care.
The range of Pavilion Tiny Treehouses work great with this plant. The filigree like details in the Pavilion complement the filigree like flow of the Pilea plant, creating a delightful scene reminiscent of water lilies and botanical gardens around the world.
TIPS FOR HOUSE PLANT DISPLAY AREAS
Styling Tiny Treehouses for Your Plants When integrating Tiny Treehouses into your botanical displays, a little planning goes a long way. If you are repotting, plant your greenery slightly to the side rather than perfectly in the middle; this leaves ample room for your Tiny Treehouse to nestle into the scene.
Keeping It Safe from Water Damage
All our treehouses come with an Acrylic Stake option so they can sit in the plant pot at the base of your plant. This ensures the wood does not come into contact with the soil.
Ideally if you are doing a drenching watering session, remove the Tiny Treehouse, but if this is not necessary, then don’t worry If you accidentally splash a treehouse when watering your plant - gently shake the excess water off and let it air dry or move it to a sunny spot by the window.
That said, any drenching or soaking in water will permanently damage the structure and integrity of your treehouse, so never leave your plant and Treehouse out in the rain, or allow the Treehouse to become soaked in water.
Should you live in a low-rainfall region and want to use your Treehouse outdoors, even if this is a covered outdoor area, we recommend weatherproofing your Tiny Treehouse.
Note: Never leave your Tiny Treehouse soaked or out in the rain without applying weatherproofing sealant - check out our weatherproofing guide first.
PLANNING
When planning to integrate a Tiny Treehouse, or if you are repotting your plants, be sure to position the plant to the side of the pot, not in the middle, to leave some room for your treehouse to full nestle within you tableau.

TOP TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR HOUSE PLANTS IN AUTUMN
Essential Autumn Tips for Indoor Plants To ensure your indoor foliage remains healthy as the weather cools, follow these top autumn tips for indoor plants:
-
Prune and Clean - Remove dead or yellowing leaves to keep your plants looking fresh. Pruning helps promote new growth and a clean plant absorbs more sunlight, keeping it healthy throughout the season.
-
Adjust Watering Frequency - As days get cooler, plants require less water. Overwatering is common in autumn and can cause root-rot, so check the soil before watering to avoid soggy roots.
-
Boost Humidity - Indoor heating can dry out the air, which can stress plants. Use a spray bottle for misting your plants instead of watering or you could place a humidifier near your plants. A clever low-maintenance option is to create a pebble tray below your pot plan using a simple watertight tray filled with pebbles and water. This will create evaporation in the room add moisture to the air, improving and maintaining the humidity levels for your plants.
-
Maximise Natural Light - With shorter days, move your plants closer to windows to capture as much natural light as possible. Rotating plants is also great practice to ensure even sunlight exposure on all sides.
-
Inspect for Pests - As you start heating your home, pests like spider mites can thrive. Regularly check your plants for any signs of pests and treat them immediately. Neem Oil is a highly recommended spray for houseplants that is organic, pesticide free and safe for family and pets.
HERE'S A MUST-HAVE LIST OF ACCESSORIES LARS RECOMMENDS FOR CARING FOR YOUR HOUSEPLANTS
Must-Have Accessories for Plant Lovers To keep your plants (and your Tiny Treehouses) looking pristine, Lars recommends adding these to your toolkit:
-
Microfibre Gloves: Dust blocks light necessary for photosynthesis; these gloves offer a gentle, fun way to wipe down leaves.
-
Moisture Metre: Takes the guesswork out of watering by telling you exact soil moisture levels.
-
Continuous Spray Misting Bottles: Delivers a fine, even mist of moisture without over-soaking specific sections.
Microfibre Gloves
These gloves are for all seasons. With windows closed more in Autumn and Winter, dust collects quickly on houseplant leaves. This can prevent them getting the precious bit of light they need for photosynthesis and growth, so these gloves are a fun, quick and gentle way to dust your plants.

A Moisture Metre
Perfect if you are new to house plants or feel unsure of the soil moisture. This meter will tell you the moisture levels and recommended watering times.

Spray Misting Bottles
What I love about these is the continuous misting feature that enables you to waft a fine mist of moisture over your plants without overdoing one section and under doing another. And they are much kinder on your hands.
